This live recording of the West Coast Premiere of Joseph
tells the redemptive story of God's merciful love.
It is a 45-minute original, dramatic, yet biblically faithful work
depicting the life of Joseph (for tenor, narrator, and piano).
Lyric tenor, Ross Hauck brings his distinguished artistry,
dramatic versatility, and unfailing musical sensibility to
this truly singular experience.
Alicia A. Lewis provides expressive piano accompaniment,
along with Robert Barnett’s dramatic narration.
"When Ross casually mentioned that he wished that he had a musical version
of the story of Joseph to sing in concert, my first response was, 'Joseph?'
My two-dimensional, flannel-graph informed icon was a spoiled dreamer who led a charmed life.
Yes, he was enslaved by jealous brothers, imprisoned by a frustrated femme fatale, and forgotten by a cupbearer; but he made out all right, always rose to the top, eventually saved all of the near eastern world from famine–including his own family, and maybe even rescued western civilization…
Oh, and he learned a little bit about forgiveness, mercy and providence along the way.
After a year of living with this story –a biography that receives the most loving attention of any biblical figure, outside the Gospel accounts of Jesus– I changed my tune, and was led over the course of a year to write Joseph.
In this story we encounter jealousy, abuse, betrayal, anger, despair, remorse, anguish, culture shock, drudgery, exploitation, entrapment, loneliness, ostracism, and God's endless mercy. It's a story for us all." -Alicia Lewis
